During DePaul University's early days, various colleges and schools held separate commencement ceremonies. The earliest date reflected in these files is of a mid-year commencement in 1932; the earliest summer commencement program included is from 1936. In 1942, there were five commencement ceremonies: February (mid-year), June (annual), August (summer), September (fall), and December (considered fall). The School for New Learning was founded by Dr. Howard Sulkin, Dean, with the assistance of Marilyn Stocker, Associate Dean, and Ann Kurland, secretary. The planning began in 1972 with grant money from the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education. The team conducted research: identifying the needs, learning style, development stages, and personal goals of the nontraditional student.
